THE BOND
It was late in the night, Laila lie down on her bed and start to prepare to sleep. Her mind becomes very moody when a heavy rain began to fall outside. Inside the school hostel, her roommate was busy with her assignments, while Laila who had finished her assignments and started to dream on the bed. Then, sadness memory came to her mind slowly… Laila comes from a poor family. She is the third of four siblings in her family. Her mother is a housewife while her father works as a guard in a nearby factory. Her family’s life is very difficult and her father has to work so hard to place enough food on the table.
When she was almost falls asleep, a thunder stroke through the air and woke her up. And at the same moment, her phone began to ring and without any alert, she picked up her phone lazily and answered it. “Hello…” she says lazily.
“Laila, father is in St.Joseph hospital now. He is suffering due to a lightly heart attack.” Her eldest brother, Razak spoke with the toneless voice through the phone.
“Hah! Heart attack!” Laila screamed out.
Suddenly, Laila’s mind went blank and be lost for word when she was informed by his brother about her father was in the hospital. She did not know what to do. At that moment, her roommate, July had noticed that what had happened to the Laila. July was willing to borrow her car to Laila on her own initiative. Laila felt grateful to July’s help.
Laila quickly changes her clothes and droves July’s car from UNIMAS toward St.Joseph hospital at Serian. Serian is a place where her family stay since Laila is born. The rain poured down heavily and caused the road becomes very slippery. It was hardly for Laila to see clearly the way during the night in such poor condition.
On the way to the hospital, her mind was full with complex thinking. The relationship between her father and her was very poor. They rarely talk to each other since Laila was a small child. She thinks that her father did not concern about her and she felt lack of love from her father. She even did not know what to do when she had seen her father later.
She still remembers that when she got the result slip of the STPM last time, she got A’s for all the subjects. She was very happy and ran toward to her father with the good news. But it ended disappointingly, because he did not said anything, even no a smile or simple praise to her. No matter how hard she worked, how well she did, there was not any feedback from her father. Their relationship became worst when Laila wanted to enter UNIMAS. Her father did not sponsor any money to her, but luckily her brother, Razak did sponsor her some money.
She hated her father a lot. After she entered UNIMAS, she prefers to stay at school hostel than staying at house. Even sometimes her mother asked her to go home during weekend, she would give a lot of excuses to her mother. Laila was facing the conflict within herself whether she should go to visit her father or not. She knew even if she goes, they would not talk much to each other too, but still she was very worry about her father. She felt anxious and speed up the car to more than 100 km/s.
The rain fell heavily likes stones hit on her car. It was very danger to drive with such a high speed during the poor condition, but Laila did not care about it. She was intended to arrive to the hospital as soon as possible. Suddenly, her car lost control and crashed into a tree besides the road. Laila was serious injured, and she was sent to the St.Joseph hospital by the pass-by enthusiast.
After treatment made by the doctor, she was saved but she was in coma. Her family was very worry about her, especially her father. Although her father was sick, he was willingly to stay beside the bed of his daughter and talk to her everyday. He said he loves her very much and he was proud of her. He was also very sorry to her that he did not show any love to her because he did not know how to do so. He hopes she will wake up quickly.
Without disappointing her father’s hope, Laila finally woke up, but her father did not come to visit her again. He only was peeping at her through peephole of the door outside the room. He was worry that her daughter was still angry with him.
On the other side, Laila realized that she had blamed her father wrongly. When she was in coma, she heard fuzzy message from her father. She also knew that her father always peeping her from outside. She even felt guilty when Razak told her the truth later that actually the sponsored money was from her father, not from him. There was a spring in her step, lightness in her heart and she felt a rare warm glow of happiness.
Laila met with her father and she asked for her father apologize. father smiles and gave her a hug. “This is our bond, my dear....”he said with a tear.
“Dad really love me very much” her heart says.
